FoodCorps volunteers help students learn about healthy eating by  gardening and cooking.   Kimball was one of several schools selected by  FoodCorps to participate in the First Lady Michelle Obama’s six annual White House Kitchen Garden planting.

In 2015, FoodCorps and DC Greens helped students create a school garden consisting of fruits, vegetables and herbs.  The students supplemented the produce harvested from the garden with produce from a local farm and sold the items at a school garden market.

Washington Nationals

In 2007, the Washington Nationals baseball team adopted Kimball as part of their community outreach program. In 2009, the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) organization partnered with the Washington Nationals to hold  a RIF Day at the school and RIF Night at the Washington Nationals Ballpark.  RIF President and CEO Carol Rasco read to second grade students and the students were able to select new books to keep as their own.  Starting players from the school’s baseball team where invited to join the Nationals when they played the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Students also participate in the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy  where, in addition to learning to play baseball and softball, they learn to improve their performance in school and make healthier food choices.

Lands and Waters

Lands and Waters  has worked with the school on a variety of environmental programs.
